[...] The poet Robert Pinsky visited UC Riverside to give a reading when I was a student and peer writing tutor at nearby Riverside Community College, Moreno Valley (now Moreno Valley College). I was (and am) a huge fan of Pinsky’s work, and at the time, I had the ambition to become poet laureate, as he was. During the question and answer session at the end of his event, I asked him, “How would you define success, as a writer?” He responded that success, as a writer, didn’t have anything to do with being published or garnering fame or money. “Accuracy, brevity, clarity,” he told me, is the definition of success as a writer. I now know that this is common advice to journalists, but it applies to all types of writing. Of course, this advice is also very easy to remember by the mnemonic “ABC.” (Incidentally, Pinsky has a fantastic poem called “ABC.”) [...]
